LOOKING back, school days are always viewed with fond memories and good times. But, when you’re still a student, chances are you’ll be a  lot impatient to grow up faster, so that you’re free to do whatever an adult does. Some students, though, just can’t be bothered to wait. So they pick up bad adult habits.

IT must have been raining something special over the past week at Petaling Jaya, as street signs are already popping up like mushrooms. The Jalan 21/22 street sign is one that can be seen as a true fighter finding its way through concrete and rocks to
establish its place among us. Once this hardy sign grows to its optimal height, it will definitely be a help to motorists.

THERE is something to be said for uniformity. As anyone will tell you, nothing beats matching colours, be it when it comes to curtains, upholstery or in this case, even garbage bags. Take this little back lane off Jalan Bukit Bintang. The traders at this tourist spot are so fashion-conscious, even their garbage bags are of the same colour. And of course, nothing says edgy like “black”.

Superhero wannabes

THERE is a fire! Make way for the Fire and Rescue cadets off to the rescue!   The superhero and his sidekick believe they are invincible and do not need helmets to protect them on their multi-purpose motorcycle. Being a superhero also gives you the privilege of making illegal U-turns to go save the world. Now, why wouldn't anyone want to be a superhero if we can be invincible, and also above the law?

TIME and time again we've said,   Protect the child, the one you ferry, Along Jalan Cheras, this boy rides with his dad, Not realising what's missing, it seems there's nothing to worry. But there's only one helmet, the one on dad's head. So what will protect the boy, if they get too close to a lorry? You'd think with such precious a cargo, dad would be more afraid,

WE complain our mattress is too hard, or the fan is busted, the air-conditioning needs servicing, and so on...
Yet, there are some who would welcome a chance to rest upon the hard mattress, in a room with or without a fan or air- conditioning. Like this vagrant sleeping on the cold, hard, filthy cement pavement at Puduraya in Kuala Lumpur. Perhaps somewhere there is a family waiting for his return, perhaps there isn't.

MALAYSIANS seem to be coming up with more creative ways to commit suicide. Harsh as it may sound, what other description - besides "suicidal" and "stupid" - come to mind when you spot stunts such as this being carried out by a motorcyclist in Subang Jaya recently? Yes, it may appear the road is near empty, but does it justify travelling the wrong way, against traffic or making illegal U-turns in the middle of the road?
Helmets mean nothing

PERHAPS the secret to absorbing more knowledge is to keep your head free of any hindrance. Be like these kids spotted in Kampung Melayu, Subang, who have obviously learnt that wearing helmets is a sure way to not get into university. After all, with such heavy helmets engulfing their heads, their brains would not be open to the invisible waves of information that can seep through as they scoot along.

IN these difficult financial times, the man on the street will cut costs any conceivable sen-saving way.   This motorcyclist, seen riding along Jalan SS2 in Petaling Jaya recently, probably traded-in one of the last few things he could - his helmet.

AT first glance, these cars look set to make a left turn at the traffic light up front. It would be a truly gratifying sight, for once, to see that traffic rules are being observed on our roads. Well, think again. These cars are in fact parked on the lane meant for making the left turn. In the process, the owners have broken the no parking rule and also turned this stretch at Jalan Pinang in Kuala Lumpur into a danger zone for accidents.
Lining up for a place

IT'S uncertain how long this pile of rubbish has been lining up for its turn to return to the rubbish bin. It could have been days or maybe weeks but they're still left out in the cold. Traders at the commercial area of Ampang Point have yet to take action against this phenomenon. It is anticipated the line will get longer if the rubbish bin does not arrive soon.

"GO! Go! Go!" You can almost hear the passengers shouting to each other as they scramble out of the bus to safety. What happened to good old fashioned stopping at-the-bus stop routine? This new routine insists on injecting a sense of excitement in your everyday life, regardless of whether you want it. Imagine the adrenalin rush as you scurry to the pavement while cars are zooming towards you on the Federal Highway.
Pedestrian crossings remain a legend

SINCE young, the legend of pedestrian crossings was told in textbooks or through teachers that it will provide a safe crossing zone for all pedestrians. But, children who grew up listening to these stories have never actually witnessed such an event. A perfect example of just how this traffic rule is not followed by motorists is illustrated by these pedestrians struggling to cross Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

RUMOURS of rubbish running amok have just been confirmed today.
Spotted at Jalan Cempedak, Sentul, this pile of wild rubbish was snapped while it was about to attack an innocent schoolboy passing through the area. Quick to react to the situation, he covered his face just in time to avoid the stench attack. The schoolboy is currently safe and recuperating at home.

ONE man's garbage is another man's money. While many choose to turn away from a pile that no one wants, this man has a different take on things. The more we throw, the more he makes. Patiently guarding what may be his only income, he's making sure that his treasure is safe. Maybe we are the ones on the wrong side of things, since money is being literally dumped into garbage bins.
This way to confusion

THE challenge is on at Taman Cheras Utama: to see just how many more confusing signals can be put in place at this traffic island. Never mind that there is already a one-way sign, placing another arrow onto an added flagpole never hurts, especially when the colour complements the bright yellow flag. Besides, does anybody  want to know if the signboard really takes one to Jalan Kas Kas 2 when there are other "interesting" notices demanding attention?

ISN'T it bad enough that we have been abandoned with no home - must we be stared at as well? It's tough having to fend  for ourselves along Leboh Ampang when we should have instead been kept secure
inside a nice, warm bin. Since that would have involved too much work for our fellow Malaysians, who used us and discarded us, we've been left fully exposed.
Lamp post with many uses

"THROWING rubbish into rubbish bins is for wimps." "All rules are meant to be broken." "Why should I follow the crowd?" With these lines probably running through his head, an enterprising Malaysian decided it was more worth his time to tie up bags of rubbish around a lamp post with a piece of metal wire, as seen here along Jalan Ipoh.

It is really a hassle to have to go to the nearby store at Bandar Mahkota Cheras.
It's just too far to walk.
At the same time, it doesn't make sense to drive the car as it would take too much time to find a parking lot.
Riding a motorbike for such trips is just right, but the afternoon's just too hot for a helmet.
But, it's best to bring one along for the ride, since the bike doesn't have a basket to carry the items that may be purchased.

IT must have been a really tiring day for him. Despite the noise from sound systems and what not, this young man is able to take a nap on this bench inside the KL Sentral transport hub in Brickfields. After all, the space is free, and air-conditioned as well. And not difficult to succumb to temptation for a tired body that seeks some comfort.

THERE is a good reason why we have a pair of eyes as high as possible on our bodies: to better view our surroundings from the best vantage point possible. That is also the same reason why some prefer to drive in vehicles where the driver's viewpoint is located higher - like lorries, for example.
Advertising space, for free

DO the people even know that a permit is needed before putting up any signs, notices or advertisements? It seems like many just don't care about the law - until even a tree trunk in Taman Desa Setapak has not been spared being defaced by those putting up banners to advertise their services. If that wasn't already bad enough, the rivalry between several parties has even led to some unfriendly  competition for this "advertising" space.

COLLECTING discarded items and selling them to scrap dealers may be a way for some to make a living. But, is it worth that much that one is willing to compromise on safety and risk life and limb just to make some money? This rider's vision along Jalan Gombak in Kuala Lumpur is limited - his view on the left is completely blocked and one can only hope that motorists are aware of his limited vision.

REMEMBER when Malaysia was listed as one of the worst ranked countries when it came to basic courtesy? Well, it looks like we might be heading for an improvement. This traffic light at Jalan Gombak seems to  have really taken this matter to heart, permanently bowing to all motorists passing by. The motorists take this "kowtowing" as duly expected, judging by how no one is bothering to advise the traffic light to stand up straight again.
Rubbish bins on strike?

THIS could be a rare scene indeed in the Klang Valley: rubbish bins are actually being put to use. But what is even less common is the sight of rubbish bins that have gone on "strike". Take these two bins near the Setiawangsa LRT station, for example. One can only guess how these bins would have felt, being ignored by the public. "Why can't the people pay more attention to us? Is there a point to our existence?"
What do you think you're looking at?

It's the contest for the biggest pile of rubbish found in a public area. And it looks like Ampang Point could be winning. Not only is it going to win the title of "Miss Rubbish Haven", it's also in the running for clinching the least number of rubbish bins found in the vicinity. But we can't blame Ampang Point for trying to win, for there is a f ierce competition for the title going on in the
Klang Valley.

WHEN a moment of excitement arrives, discipline gets flung out of the window. The presence of Hong Kong superstar Edison Chen was enough to get these teenagers clamouring for a good look at their idol. And to do whatever they had to, to get a good view of him. But the sacrifice is on the part of this Proton Saga, providing them with a vantage point.

IT has now become a medium to campaign on social issues. People have been too busy living in their comfortable shells that they forget there are others out there who don't have the luxury to enjoy life. If we continue to turn a blind eye, this grafitti could well be right. Vandalism may just be the most effective way to highlight issues.

DON'T judge a book by its cover. So the proverb goes..
Sure, at first glance it would seem the driver of this four-wheel-drive vehicle arrogantly created his own parking space. And on the pavement behind the Jalan 1/18A bus stop, off Jalan Ipoh in Kuala Lumpur. Or, driven delirious by yesterday's punishing midday heat, he imagined being in a 4x4 adventure rally, where designated parking is unheard of.

FOR years, it guided the way and yet no one said thank you.
It did not mind.
No one to talk to and with only other signboards for company.
It did not complain.
Standing tall and standing proud at the corner of Jalan1/18A in Jalan Ipoh.
It did not boast.
Then the day came when it fell, unable to see and unable to stand.
No one helped for no one cared and there it lay to stare at the sky.
This time it cried,
Glimmer of hope remains

SOMETIMES, the smallest act can remind us all is not lost. Take this scene near Ampang Point, taken by our pixman yesterday. We have long become resigned to the fact that Malaysians believe rubbish is best discarded outside of rubbish bins, under "do not litter" signboards, hung on lamp posts or simply dumped in drains. So, when this motorcyclist rode up to the pile of rubbish with an empty plastic cup in hand, we assumed the worst.

IN this crazy world, people would do just about anything to get attention. That would certainly seem to be the case here in this scene at Jalan Bunus in Kuala Lumpur. Why else would this genius park his eye-catching chilli-red car on top of the curb and right next to a bright yellow "Zon Tunda" ( Towing Zone) sign? Or, could he have perhaps thought yellow would be an excellent accent to his car's paint job?

TAKE the road less travelled, we frequently tell our youth.
A wise saying indeed but these young ones we spotted along Jalan Kayu Ara in Damansara probably took
these words a tad too literally
These two probably decided to show the world a thing or two and discover what they were made of in the process
Broken bones? “Bah!” they probably thought, dismissing the possibility of twisted ankles and angry parents.

IS she learning how to ride a bike? If so, whoever’s giving her instructions has failed to make sure of several critical matters. For one, the helmet should be on her head and not hanging from the handle bar. Equally important, learning how to ride right should be done at designated training areas and not along busy Jalan Pudu! And working further down the checklist, it will also be a good idea to have on some proper footwear than just slippers.

Is it a walkway ? Or a good place to park motorcycles? This stretch, apparently for pedestrians, was specially built, we are given to understand, for the convenience of those who walk, so that they do not have to step on the very busy Jalan Kia Peng in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. However, some bikers feel that it is a great place for them to park. Good, shady parking space and the best of all, it’s free. Pedestrians, you say? What are that?

And what about the safety helmet that is sitting securely on the motorbike?

FOR those about to enrol in the marriage institution, a traffic light symbolises everything. Red is the colour of
passion, yellow is to show care and green is the colour for giving. Therefore, those advertising here on a traffic light turning into Jalan Batu Unjur, Klang are showing all those in town what their lives are going to be like. If only they realise married couples don't need such reminders!

WHAT better way to get through another day of scorching, muggy weather than with some juicy ripe
mangoes? Here at Jalan Pudu, the scent of this delectable fruit wafting through the downtown smog would surely lure hungry pedestrians away from their frantic pace and well-worn routes. Does it matter that it's an illegal set-up? No... not really. Does it matter that for RM7 you get 10 mangoes?
